The course is divided into Basics and Advanced sections. The Basics section begins by introducing the concepts and benefits of Business Automation, Low-Code, and standards-based platforms. We discuss the two basic Low-Code Business Automation patterns: an executable workflow service invoked by and external client app, and a self-contained pageflow app, both based on executable BPMN and DMN. The Basics section focuses on the workflow service and the Advanced section on the pageflow app.

In Basics, we review aspects of DMN used heavily in Business Automation – lists and tables, calendar arithmetic, and data input validation. We then discuss the major difference between executable BPMN and the descriptive process modeling taught in BPMN Method and Style, which is the role of process data. Understanding the relationship between process variables (data objects, data inputs and outputs) and task variables, and techniques of mapping between them, is the key to Low-Code Business Automation. We follow that with a deep dive into configuration of five key BPMN task types: Decision task, Service task, Script task, User task, and Call Activity. We’ll see how to take advantage of the thousands of public REST APIs available by importing OpenAPI files into the Trisotech Operation Library and calling them from Service tasks. We also discuss use of new platform features, Cloud Datastores and User task configuration, what Trisotech calls their “system of engagement”. That is really all you need to know to do Low-Code Business Automation. At the end of the Basics section, students create a working version of the EU-Rent Vacation Request workflow process. Students earn Business Automation Basics certification by passing a multiple choice exam at the end of the Basics section.

The Advanced section builds on the basic techniques taught in Basics and adds two more: Low-Code database operations and creating Operation Library entries manually from published API documentation. The Advanced section is almost entirely hands-on. Students will build a working Stock Trading pageflow app using a MySQL database and a real-time stock quote API, and earn certification by completing the app and demonstrating its operation with a few simulated stock trades.

Students completing the Business Automation training should have no trouble applying it to almost any Business Automation project in their organization.
